Practical Production: 1 Minute Film

Scream School:

Pre Production:
We were given four lessons to plan, produce and edit our one minute clip so we very quickly decided that the genre of our film would be a horror based around a murder mystery.

We then created a story board with the key scenes in the clip and allocated who would play each part and who would film; a script was not necessary as we didn't want much dialogue so that the scream would stand out. 

Hannah and I then went to find a location and we ended up using the music block as it was quiet and easily accessible. It also gave us control over empty rooms so we could play around with the lighting.


Production:
We were only given a short time so had to adapt to the camera quickly. Etienne was the camera man. 

As a group we decided it would be best to not use the tripod and have the camera being held by hand following us through the action. This allowed the audience to be placed in the action and feel more involved.


Post Production:
All four of us had a go at editing the footage using final cut pro. It was our first time using the software however we still managed to finish editing it.

We trimmed the footage, cut out sound, added music, transitions and a black and white effect to fit the genre of the film.

We finished the post production prosess by uploading the footage onto YouTube through Hannah's channel.


My Reflection:
W W W: The hand held camera work went well with the genre of the film and helped the audience fee involved. Also we were all able to use final cut pro and use various techniques such as transitions.

E B I: There was a slow pace start to our one minute film clip which would perhaps work better at the beginning of a film rather than in the middle of a film.

Distributon: creating an auduience - trailer analysis

The Conventions:
The first thing that I notice in both of the trailers is the dramatic music in the background. This is very fitting to the genre of the films which are both action, thrillers. Both soundtracks are accompanied with a voice over by some of the main characters. In "Spectre" (Mendes, 2015) this is by James Bond (Daniel Craig) and in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - part 1 (Lawrence, 2014) it is by a variety of characters. The voiceovers allow the viewer to get a brief understanding of the characters and their storyline as they take you through the trailers before you go to watch the film.

As well as them both containing special effects for explosions, both of the trailers have the titles of the film at the end which are followed by the iconic sounds associated with the films. In "The Hunger Games" this is the whistle which represents peace and in "Spectre" it is the typical Bond sound track. This allows the viewer to associate the films with other films in the sequel's; possibly making them more likely to go and watch the films. Both of the trailers end with a release date to inform the audience when they can go and watch the film. This creates a buzz around the film as it can help get people talking about the film. 

Target Audience:
I think that the target audience for both of these films would start at teenagers. However I think that an older audience are more likely to watch "Spectre" as it is a sequel that has gone on since 1962 whereas the hunger games was first screened in 2012 so would be more likely to have a younger audience such as 13 - 22. Both films have a similar age rating as spectre is PG-13 and "The Hunger Games" is a 12A. The hunger games could also attract an audience that enjoyed reading the novels.  


In "The Hunger Games" the distributor tried to target this particular audience as they included well known stars like Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. Both "Mockingjay" and "Spectre" include dramatic action scenes in the trailers that both have a number of special effects that can be enticing to the viewer. The distributor of "Spectre" can also attract a slightly wider audience of and older generation as it includes sex and nudity as well as drugs and alcohol.     

My personal response:
I think that both of the trailers to "Spectre" and "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - part " are enticing and intriguing to the audience. I think that after watching both of the trailers they intrigue me to watch the film, especially as they are both parts of a sequel.

"Spectre"

(Mendes, 2015)

Premier:

The World Premiere of 'Spectre' was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on October 26th 2015. The majority of the cast attened including Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux, Monica Bellucci, Naomie Harris, Christoph Waltz, Dave Bautista, Sam Mendes, Andrew Scott, Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw, Producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. Sam Smith also attended as he sings 'The writing is on the wall' that features in the film. They joined Their Royal Highness, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry at the premiere of the 24th Bond film.

Extra details and facts:

• Filming locations: Mexico City, London, Rome, Morocco, Tokyo, Austria.
• Day of the dead festival in Mexico City used 1500 extras
• Day of the dead festival costumes took 6 months to make
• 8 bespoke Aston Martin cars were used and one Jaguar (some of the fastest cars in the world 
• Rome was shut down for the racing scene between the Aston martin and the jaguar
• real explosions were used to create "visceral excitement that you can only get in real stunts" - Sam Mendes 
• explosion in Morocco broke a world record for the latest explosion.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - part 1

(Lawrence, 2014)

Premier:
The UK premier of 'The hunger games Mockingjay: part 1" took place in London on the 10th November 2014. Cast members such as Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jeffrey Wright all attended Including the artist Lord as she sang songs that featured in the film.

"Suffragette" (Gravon, 2015)

The conventions:
The soundtrack of the film at starts off with a slow tempo which helps provoke emotion from the audience. The soundtrack contrasts with the high impact scenes that flash on and off of the screen which help show the genre of the film as a period drama. The trailer shows short clips of the film to help entice the audience. The clips also fade into each other; helping create a calmer atmosphere to juxtapose the intense and dramatic scenes.

The repetition of the phrase "vote for women" at the beginning immediately informs the viewer what the film is about. Information about the film is also shown on the screen throughout the trailer such as the time of release and messages to the viewer like "nothing ever changes". This helps the viewer to become involved in the trailer and make them more intrigued to watch the film. Towards the end of the trailer the title of the film is revealed followed by a clip showing Meryl Streep which has a star appeal on the viewer and suggests that she is a key character in the film.

Target audience
From the film trailer "Suffragette" I think that the main target audience of the film is women as it shows what women had to go through to get the rights and freedom that we have today. However another possible target audience could be a slightly smaller minority of those that are currently fighting for equality. Another target audience could be people who enjoy watching period dramas as it is the genre of the film. The film has some iconic actress' such as Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Cater which can also attract another audience.

More than a hundred feminist protesters jumped the barriers onto the red carpet at the premiere of Suffragette in Leicester Square on October 12th 2015. Women were seen being physically carried and pushed back over barriers as green and purple smoke bombs filled the air outside the Odeon cinema in central London. Stars such as Helena Bonham Cater, Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep all attended the uk premier.

"Sixteen" (Rob Brown, 2013)

Plot Summary:
'Sixteen' is and urban thriller about an african child soldier called Jumah who was brought to live in London by and aid worker called laura who is now his guardian. Jumah is about to turn 16 and wants to move on from his past and things start to look better when he forms a romance with a girl at school. However Jumah witnesses a stabbing and the people involved want to make sure he doesn't say anything to the police, forcing violence bach into his life.
